 2012 U3A Outings

At our planning meeting this week a programme of visits about every 6 weeks was decided on. If all  goes to plan we expect to include one major museum, two interesting houses with gardens, one important garden (probably Wisley)  and two all- day tours. This is a total of six visits from April to October.

At present I only have definite details for a visit to the Horniman museum on Wednesday April 4th.

The museum is in Forest Hill,  South London and opened in 1901.  The contents are based on the collections of Fred Horniman, a keen traveller,  and are described as being from natural and cultural sources.  He started collecting from the early 1800s.   There are 17 acres of gardens and spectacular views over London .  There is a shop and a café and picnic area.    I can see from their website www.horniman.ac.uk that this is a large museum and takes a lot of trouble to attract young visitors. We are urged not to come in school holidays!  This visit has been suggested by a U3A member.

The cost of coach travel is £11 and entrance to the museum is free unless you opt to go into their aquarium for which there is a charge of £2.    There is a very convenient coach drop off point so I do not expect mobility problems.   The museum says it is wheel-chair friendly.

To make a reservation please contact Lesley Harvey on (01245)353616.

Cheques should be made payable to Chelmsford U3A and sent to Lesley at 6 Avenue Road, Great Baddow CM2 9TY with your name and contact phone number before February 29th

Departure times are Asda 10am, Hole in the hedge 10.10am and Writtle pond at 10.20am

The second outing is on May 16th  to visit Woodbridge to stretch our legs and have refreshments.  After lunch we travel a little further to visit Otley Hall where we shall have a guided tour of the house,  visit their gardens and have afternoon tea.

Details of this visit will be in the next Newsletter. The cost is likely to be around £22 and you could book with Lesley in the usual way if you wish..
